"It’s a privilege to help local people through case work. I am able to make a real difference for those who really need help."
I've been a member of the party for as long as I can remember, but a few years ago I got involved with my local branch, then became the local branch secretary. Before the last election I noticed how few women were standing, so I decided I should stand and give the men a run for their money. I also wanted a career change and thought I should give something back to my local community.
I was self employed until the last election, working in arts development, and before that I worked in local government.
My council work fits very well with the rest of my life. I'm used to working from home from when I was self employed. I have an office area in my living room and I am able to work around some of the irregular hours of council business.
Council work can take all of your time if you let it, but I'm learning to maintain the balance between council and personal life.
It's a privilege to be able to help local people through case work. I am able to make a real difference for those who really need help. When people say thank you I feel like I'm making a real difference and I find that really rewarding.
